During this 4 hours walking tour you’ll be able walk through the main highlights of Lisbon’s historical center while learning the untold story of the Jewish presence in Lisbon.
Walk through Rossio square, Chiado, Baixa, Alfama and Comercio square. While this can be your orientation walking tour of Lisbon, the main focus will be the Jewish presence in these areas, the layout of the streets and what once happened in each place. Stand where the terrible massacre of 1506 occurred and understand how and why it happened. Did you know that in medieval times there were two Jewish communities, so important they’d answer directly to the king? Walk by those areas and discover what they became today. Listen to quotes from “The last Kabbalist of Lisbon”, a real story, while stepping those same streets.
Discover the importance of the Jewish community for the age of discoveries and how the expulsion of 1496 is linked to the decay of Portugal itself. Learn how the need to blend-in made “new-Christians” create a Kosher sausage that is still enjoyed by Catholics today. More recently, we were the safe place for those fleeing from central Europe, having our own “Oskar Schindler”, Aristides Sousa Mendes. Different earthquakes, as well as the Catholic Inquisition, destroyed most of the physical Jewish presence but the story can still be told.
